Katharos

“Katharos” 2016 for Symphony Orchestra, written for and performed by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, commissioned by the National Women in Composition Development Program

Duration:

6:00

Program Note

Katharos— the Greek word for ‘cleansing’ and the origin of the English term ‘catharsis’. The purification and purgation of emotions—especially pity and fear—through art, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions; "music is a means of catharsis for them".
One must seek catharsis for the unease that comes with our chaotic, modern day world. Music has provided a means of emancipation at times in my own life, and I now owe the cosmos the duty of providing that same relief via my art, to anyone that may choose to listen.
