Sydney composer, PhD candidate and music educator Natalie Nicolas completed her Master of Music (Composition) degree under scholarship at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Nicolas has written for the Australian String Quartet, percussionist Claire Edwardes, the Goldner String Quartet, the Muses Trio, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO), TSO Principal Viola Stefanie Farrands, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) flautist Virginia Taylor, CSO harpist Alice Giles, cellist Georg Pedersen, Geist String Quartet, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), and others.

 

In 2013, Nicolas wrote for the Australian String Quartet under the guidance of Andrew Ford, as a winner of the National Composers Forum. She has also had a piece premiered in Hong Kong and in Shenzhen at the Pinyin Festival and the New Music Ensemble by the ensemble 'Kollektiv Totem'. 

 

Nicolas was selected for the inaugural National Women Composer's Development Program in 2016-2018.

 

Nicolas won the prestigious Flinders Quartet Composition Competition in 2017 and 2019, which saw the world premiere of her works on both occasions by the Flinders String Quartet. Nicolas went on to receive the Flinders String Quartet ‘All That We Are’ residency.

 

In 2017-18, Nicolas was commissioned by the Hush Foundation, and wrote for the ACO alongside mentors Paul Stanhope and Matthew Hindson. Her piece ‘We Won’t Let You Down’ premiered at City Recital Hall in Sydney and Melbourne Recital Centre in 2018. 

 

In 2018, Nicolas was a selected composer for the National Gondwana School where she studied with Antony Pitts, director of the Song Company; that same year, the Muses Trio premiered her piece ‘Afflatus’ in multiple concerts in an Australian east coast tour for International Women’s Day. ABC Classic FM interviewed Natalie as a featured composer, and featured Natalie in November 2018’s ‘AusMusic Month’, where “We Won’t Let You Down” was used in the broadcasting’s imaging throughout the month of November. 

 

In 2020, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra commissioned Nicolas as a part of their groundbreaking ‘50 Fanfares’ project, that will see her produce a piece for the iconic orchestra in months to come. The Hills Symphony Orchestra have also commissioned Nicolas for a new orchestral work, due to premiere in Sydney in September. Nicolas also won the prestigious Harold and Gwenneth Harris Endowment for Medical Humanities Harris Award 2019/20, for her doctoral work with music and healthcare. In February, she found herself featured on ABC Classic FM's 'Best of Australian Classical Music, and on the International Women’s Day ‘Women of Note’ vol. 2 album, also released by ABC Classic FM.

 

In addition to her composition, Natalie is a tutor and lecturer at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She also lectures for New South Wales Higher Education Certificate composition, owns and operates a piano tuition studio and sings and performs in various ensembles around Sydney.
